Dental Care

While you may try to brush your pet’s teeth from time to time, it’s unlikely that you’re able to get them as clean as you’d like. While regular brushing is important, it’s also necessary to have your pet’s teeth professionally cleaned. Our veterinarians at Doubletree Veterinary Clinic are experienced in providing pet dental cleanings.

Your Pet’s Teeth

By the young age of three, many dogs and cats are already in the beginning stages of periodontal disease. Whether your pet is already having dental problems or not, it’s important that their teeth are cleaned regularly, either to stop the progression of dental disease or to prevent dental disease from starting. Dental procedures are completed under anesthesia, as this allows your pet to be fully relaxed and safe while our veterinarian treats their teeth and gums. During your pet’s dental cleaning, our veterinarian will take X-rays to check for any dental problems that are lingering below the surface of the gum line. Our vet will then perform a full dental evaluation, checking for dental diseases, broken teeth, and inflammation in the gums. After the dental evaluation, our veterinary staff will perform a full cleaning and polishing of your pet’s teeth, much like your dentist does at your own cleanings.

After your pet’s dental cleaning, our veterinarian will talk with you about any oral health care concerns for your pet. This may involve scheduling tooth extraction or repair, or simply adjusting your pet’s at-home oral health care routine. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have about how to best care for your pet’s teeth. While your pet’s gums may be slightly sore after their cleaning, this should not interfere with their ability to eat or drink.
